You are invited to participate in an overseas missions trip in Kenya! This is for adults (18 & older). Hope will leave Friday, October 5 to Kenya and return Tuesday, October 16.
The Ministry
Mathare Valley is referred to as the oldest and worst slum in Africa. This shanty village is about 3 miles from Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi City Center. The area is very densely populated with almost 500,000 people living in a very small area of 1.2 miles by .2 miles. Hope will be ministering to approximately 80 students at the Victory Junior Academy located in the Mathare Valley Slums. These kids have experienced a lot of grief in their brief life, but are learning about God’s love through this school. We will be spending the week with these children, serving them in different capacities, mostly by loving on them, having lots of fun and learning their stories.
Safari
Hope will go on a 2 day safari to the masai mara. You’ll experience an authentic dose of African wilderness with legendary Kenyan hospitality.
Cost
Total cost of the trip will be $3000 for those who attend Hope. (For non Hopers the cost is $3,500) This includes airfare, accommodations, local transportation, meals and a safari. The only additional expense will be your souvenirs. A non-refundable $300 deposit is due with the application. The cost will increase to $3,200 after July 8, 2012. At that time 50% of the trip is due. See the payment schedule below:
- $3000 deposit with the application
- The price increases to $3,200 after July 8
- 50% due by Sunday, July 8
- 75% is due by Sunday, August 5
- 100% due by Sunday, September 9
Passport Cost
Each individual will be responsible for their own passport costs. You can apply for a passport at most post offices around the area. The cost for a passport is a $25 acceptance fee and a $110 application fee ($135 altogether). For an additional $15 fee, your passport photo may be taken at some of the post offices too. (You can also go to Walgreens and get your passport photo taken for $9.99.)
Electric Appliances
You will need to purchase an electrical converter since Kenya uses 220 volts instead of 110. You may want to instead purchase a traveler’s hair-dryer, curler, irons, etc. with a switch for 110 or 220 volts. Some converters don’t last long and may burn your appliance. We recommend a converter with a Hi-Lo switch.
Immunizations
Although there are no required immunizations by law, we do suggest that you consult your family physician to find out what immunizations you should get, if any. Common vaccines that most people get include yellow fever, typhoid, tetanus, Hep A and Hep B. Please remember the costs of any vaccine that you get will be your responsibility.
Raising Support
A raising support brochure is available at the Connect Center or you can download it by clicking here. As a short term outreach team member, you may receive contributions through sponsors. You are encouraged to begin raising support early for your trip and to be creative! Pick up a brochure for guidance and more information.
